Cecil Frank Calkin was the first child of Frank & Lula Belle Calkin. He attended Brookfield High School, later working in Brown Shoe Factory. He married Floella Wilson on Dec 23, 1922, in Livingston, MO, and they moved to Oregon. After their divorce, Cecil married Lorraine Ruth (Butler) McCullen on August 30, 1958.

Cecil entered the US Army in 1942 at Ft. Lewis, WA. He served in Aviation Mechanics in Salt Lake City, UT, and Nashville, TN, where he received a medical release. Then he served in defense work in Portland, OR, until he received an Honorable Discharge in December, 1944, after having attained the rank of Corporal. Cecil later opened a shoe repair shop in Salem, OR.
