David Davis

STERLING – David Lee Davis of Sterling died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at CGH Medical Center, after a short illness.

David was born July 28, 1939, in Sterling, the son of Orval Lambert Davis and Beulah Louise (Mayers) Davis. He married Nancy Kay Sulouff on Aug. 10, 1956.

Surviving are his spouse, Nancy, and their four children, Bradley Scott Davis and spouse, Sonia of Sterling, Randal Clark Davis of Sterling, Sherrie Lynn Ebersole and spouse, Stephen Ebersole of Van Horne, Iowa, and Cameron Jay Davis of Chicago; one brother, Richard Davis and spouse, Lola of Sterling; three grandchildren, Kevin Anthony Davis and spouse, Stephanie of Morton, Brionne Leanne Thome of Marshall, Minn., and Brooke Lauren Lerma and spouse, Mikhail Lerma of Lincoln, Neb.; one stepgranddaughter, Andrea Lea Diehl of Sterling; his two precious great-granddaughters, Amilia Kay Marie Lerma and Rebekah Jo Lynn Lerma; one sister-in-law, Betty (Alvin) Dettman of Milledgeville; brother- and sister-in-law, Lester and Joyce Mathew of Morrison; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Edward Davis and spouse, Carol Davis; one stepgranddaughter, Jessica Kay Diehl; one brother in-law, Alvin Dettman; and one niece, Peggy Dettman.

David was employed by RB & W Corp. for 37 years, having served 25 years as wire mill supervisor. David also was employed by MGF Industries, Rockford, as training-safety director and process engineer.

David was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Sterling, and a 43-year member of the local Sterling/Rock Falls Barbershop chorus, especially enjoying quartet singing.

As an avid reader, David enjoyed American history and its political attributes. During his children's childhood years, he participated in the Sterling Little League Program as a manager for 17 years, and later umpired for many years in local area fastpitch softball, Little League and high school baseball programs.

In retirement, David enjoyed using his carpentry skills, doing remodeling and new construction for his children and other family members.

The last few years, he became very active in his family genealogy. He developed an extensive genealogical database, which includes a written history of his life and the lives of many other family members as far back as the 1600s.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McDonald-Allen-Grennan Funeral Home, 505 First Ave., Sterling. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St John Lutheran Church, 703 Third Avenue, Sterling. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
