John Joseph DeWitt Filleman, nicknamed "Jodie," died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 at the Olivia White Hospice Home in Flagstaff. He was 89.

Mr. Filleman was born Nov. 6, 1918 in Clifton, to Bessie and Howard Filleman (all native Arizonans). He was married to Justine Sears on April 10, 1943, and they had three children, Jerry (Gwin), of Flagstaff, John (Teresa), of Phoenix, and Jo Ann (Mickelson/Harvey), of Flagstaff.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corp as a captain. Prior to his military service, he had been attending Arizona State University. He set a record in pole vault at ASU.

He pursued his love of building and became an accomplished home builder in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. He was also a rancher, having been a partner in the family ranch located on Eagle Creek between Clifton and Alpine. Many famous paintings have been done of the Filleman ranch. Mr. Filleman also served in Ruidoso, New Mexico, on the city council. He was a church elder, bowler, artist, fisherman, card player and friend to animals. He loved his family

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, three children, nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at the Norvel Owens Mortuary. A viewing will be for family and friends at 10 a.m., with services to begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the veterans section of Citizens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in the name of Jodie be made to Northland Hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ 86002. The funds will be used to build an arbor at the Olivia White Hospice Home.

Norvel Owens Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
