Wasilla resident Charles Robert Fishback, 79, died March 21, 2006, at home. A graveside service was at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Fishback was born June 28, 1926, in Hollywood, Fla., to Mary Parmley and Leland Kenneth Fishback. He graduated from Purdue University with degrees in naval science and tactics and chemical engineering. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserves. On April 17, 1954, he married Pauleen Homer. Mr. Fishback moved to Alaska in 1969 and to Wasilla in 1993. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and taking walks with them in summer. His family said he was "a great grandfather who was a true American, since his favorite things were fried chicken, potato salad, picnics and pickup trucks." Mr. Fishback worked for Standard Oil in Los Angeles and for the state of Alaska as a chemical engineer in Fairbanks for 20 years.
Survivors are his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Karen Fishback of Norco, Calif., Leland and Jill Fishback of Wasilla, David and Karen Fishback of Lehi, Utah, and Jeffrey and Brandy Fishback of Wasilla; daughters and sons-in-law, Maralee and Kelly Johnson of Rocklin, Calif., and Raeleen and David Hancock of Chino Hills, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
