Colonel John Raymond Lovell was flying his RB-45 Tornado Bomber over North Korea when he was shot down. He was captured and turned over to the authorities for interrogation. He was beaten to death by an angry mob of civilians and his body was never recovered.
Colonel Lovell received the Air Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart.
An "In Memory Of" marker has been placed in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in his honor.
∼See Find A Grave Memorial# 45476665.
Both of these memorials are cenotaphs
(a marker in memory of someone whose
remains are elsewhere). I'm sad to
learn that his body was never recovered.
His dear parents are buried in Shaul
Cemetery.
