Col. James C. Fitzpatrick Sr. - (Press Democrat 11/25/09)

Passed away November 19, 2009. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on January 29, 1921. He is survived by his wife Mary; two sons, Gerald Fitzpatrick and his wife Patricia and James Fitzpatrick, Jr. and his wife Melinda; grandchildren, Clint, Thaddeus James, Jordan, Janette and Kyle Fitzpatrick; and stepchildren Mike and Molly Holmes, Scott and Kathy Brady, Jean Aquino and Tim and Nancy Branstetter. Jim attended Pennsylvania State College and joined the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1943. In 1948, Jim was promoted to Major and was assigned to the Air Force Reserve Officers training program, serving as an assistant professor of air science at Rutgers University and Stevens Institute of Technology. He subsequently earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens in 1953. In 1960, Jim was assigned to the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory at Edwards Air Force Base, where he served as chief of the Liquid Propulsion Division. In 1964, Jim was transferred to the Pentagon. During his assignment at the Pentagon, he was promoted to Colonel and was responsible for the Titan III space booster, standard launch vehicles and the large solid motors program. In 1970, he became chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency office, responsible for aerospace systems definitions of collection and surveillance requirements. After 30 years of service Jim retired from active duty. Later that year he accepted a position at Lockheed from which he retired in 1984. During Jim's military career he was involved with the development of the first spy satellite program called Corona. He was also instrumental in the writing and research for the book, "Corona Between the Sun and the Earth." Upon his retirement, he moved to Bodega Harbour where he served on the board of the PUD. He enjoyed golf and playing bridge. Jim and Mary enjoyed traveling, in particular their trip to Ireland and weekend getaways to the Mendocino Coast. Jim loved to watch baseball, golf and football. Jim was also an avid reader, finishing two books that he was reading on his Iphone, the week before his passing. Jim was a true gentleman and will be missed by everyone who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at St. Philips Catholic Church in Occidental at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. The family prefers memorials be made to: the Rural Food Program, c/o St. Philip's Parish, P.O. Box 339, Occidental, CA 95465. Family assisted by~ LAFFERTY & SMITH COLONIAL CHAPEL.
