Private First Class Gilbride was a member of a machine gun platoon, Company H, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action defending Hills 111 and 126 in the "Boulder City" area of North Korea on July 25, 1953. Private First Class Gilbride was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Prior to Korea his basic training was completed at Camp Lejeune.

PFC Michael Joseph Gilbride was killed by an explosive device, probably a grenade, in the last ground action of the Corps in the Korean War. He almost came home.
