SHELBYVILLE - Oma C. Bartscht, 79, of Shelbyville died 11:35 a.m. Wednesday (April 16, 1997) in Shelby Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and until 1 p.m. Sunday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorials: United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, Shelby County Extension Foundation, Shelby Memorial Hospital Foundation or American Business Women's Association Scholarship Fund.

Mrs. Bartscht was born on Aug. 27, 1917, in Pana, the daughter of Walter and Cecilia Lamb Chastain. She had been active in the Shelbyville community for more than 50 years. Her involvements included: a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church were she was a charter member of the United Methodist Women and was active in the Sunday School program. She was a 40-year member of Shelby County Home Extension where she served on their council and was active as Shelby County 4-H committee chairperson and 4-H leader for Findlay Stitch-in-Time. She spent 20 years with the Shelby Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she served as president and was awarded a 1,000 hour pin for her work in the hospital. She went on to become president of the District Hospital Auxiliary serving on the state board. She was a member of the Lioness Club, 17-year-member of American Business Women's Association and Women of the Moose Lodge, all of Shelbyville, and worked on committees for the Farm-City Banquet and FarmerMerchant Pork Chop Dinner.

In 1971 she started a radio talk show at WSHY called ''Around the Community with Oma Bartscht'' which featured people and special events of the county. She later started a newspaper column by the same name in 1977 which was featured in the Daily Union. Along with her husband, she was very involved with the American Cancer Society, serving at the county, district and state levels and helped raise money for cancer research. She later became active in the selling of cancer insurance, which she sold to benefit the residents of Shelby County. She married Charles R. Bartscht on June 5, 1941, in Webster Groves, Mo.

Surviving are her husband; daughters, Charla Fischbach and husband Richard of Shelbyville; Cheryl Ellison and husband Terry of Watertown, Tenn.; sisters, Hester Allard and Ada Hardy, both of Belleville; Velma Jackson of Bellflower, Calif.; two grandchildren, Christopher and Craig Ellison.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clark Bartscht in 1989, and two brothers in infancy.
