The families of both of her parents came to the British North America during the Colonial period: the Kartchner family, circa 1750 and the Wilcox family before 1700.

Her father was a paper maker in and around the Philadelphia area, at one point co-owning and operating a mill with a member of his wife's family. After a brief service in the Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812, her father seemed to have lost his focus in life. The paper mill he co-owned went out of business, forcing him to go from job to job to earn enough to take care of his young, growing family. Her mother worked as a "rag picker" in a paper mill while tending to her youngest children. At one point her father wanted to move west to Ohio, but the family remained in Pennsylvania, in nearby Montgomery County - where Sarah was born in 1823 in Merion Township.

Sarah lost her father in 1826. The 1830 Federal Census showed that her household consisted of herself and two daughters: with one daughter over sixteen and one daughter under sixteen. At one point, her mother had to petition for assistance from the Township of Philadelphia to help educate Sarah at the beginning of the 1830's.

In 1833, when Sarah was ten years old, her mother married Francis B. Collins, a native of Virginia. Sarah Ann was left in the care of one of her mother's cousins - Mr. Byrtle Shay, who kept a store in Philadelphia - so that her mother and Mr. Collins could relocate to and set up a household in Harpers Ferry, Virginia [Source: Autobiographic Journal of William Decatur Kartchner].

Sarah "Kitchner" and Thomas GW Pigg were married by Minister W.H,. Jordan in Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, Virginia on 6 December 1845. Little is known about Thomas George Washington Pigg prior to his marriage to Sarah Ann. Based on available records and the family records of their eldest daughter - Euphemia P Krigline - he was the son of George and Sarah Pigg, born on the 13th of November 1822 in Norfolk, Virginia. The extent of his family is not known, but it appears that he may have had at least three sisters - of these, Sarah, appears to have married William A. Titmus and mothered the man who would later marry their daughter, Georgianna.

The first verification of the family history of Sarah and Thomas Pigg was in the 1850 Federal Census. The growing Pigg family, along with the growing family of her sister Margaret Webb and their mother (recently widowed for the second time) were found in Beauvis, Ste Genevieve County, Missouri (it is possible that some of Thomas' family may have also moved to Ste Genevieve County, there is a sizable "Pigg Family" Cemetery in that area). Thomas was listed as a "Tinner" and this census recorded the birth of their first two children.

Around 1853, the two families moved to Jasper County, Iowa - joining their brother, John Christopher. In Poweshiek Township, Thomas bought the land that he would farm for about 40 years.

The last official record of Sarah and Thomas in Iowa was the 1885 Iowa State Census, which showed that they were alone and still farming in Poweshiek Township, Jasper County. It appears that they sold their land shortly afterward and moved to Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. Later city directories indicated that they had bought a house at 1607 Beattie St. Their son, Thomas F., may have moved with them after the death of his wife Maria and only child sometime after 1885.

Thomas died on the 30th of January 1896. Sarah survived him for another eleven years, dying just four days after her 84th birthday - on the 11th of September 1907. Both were buried at the Ashland Cemetery in St Joseph.
