William Edward Durr, M.D., who called himself W.E. Durr, M.D. and was called "Will" by his family and very close friends.

Born on the family farm on the northwest corner of Bradford-Children's Home Road and Arcanum-Bears Mill Road in Adams Township, south of Stelvideo, Darke County, Ohio.

Received M.D. degree from what is now Ohio State University's medical school.

Married Stella Rice December 27, 1904, Methodist Church, Versailles, Darke County, Ohio.

Practiced medicine first in Ludlow Falls, Ohio, where both of his children were born.

After moving his family to Cincinnati, he worked for a time in the post office.

During the influenza epidemic following World War I, the U.S. Public Health Service sent him to Glencoe, Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio.

In gratitude for his work there and to induce him to stay, the local coal mining company gave him a house in Glencoe and he practiced in Glencoe from 1919 until his death in 1947.

After coming to Belmont County, hhe and his wife became United Presbyterians, joining first the First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville, before transferring to the First Presbyterian Church in Martins Ferry.

Death Ends Practice of Dr. W. E. Durr, 71: Dr. W. E. Durr, who practiced medicine 29 years at Glencoe [Ohio] died in the Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling [West. Va.], early this morning [May 16, 1947] at the age of 71. His death resulted from a paralytic stroke he suffered three weeks ago,

Dr. Durr started his practice in Glencoe during the influenza epidemic of 1918 when he came to the Belmont County village from Cincinnati. After the emergency was over, the physician stayed in Glencoe, where he was active until three weeks before his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Rice Durr, at home, a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Calvert, Boston [West Newton, Mass.]; a son, Ralph Edward Durr, Martins Ferry; and six grandchildren.

The body has been removed to the Johnston Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, pending funeral arrangements.
