Maria McDowell, oldest daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Tilton McDowell, married James Coe on October 7, 1828. The day of the marriage had been fixed to take place on the 18th of September, but one week previous to that time both the father and mother were stricken with a very fatal fever that prevailed in their neighborhood and on the appointed day for her marriage she (Maria) stood at the bedside of her dying father and he placed in her hands the care of her little brother and sister. Her life of devotion proved her faithful to the trust. A few hours later took from her a most loving mother. This was her appointed marriage day, changed to a day of mourning which she could never forget. She wanted to give up her marriage, but her relatives and friends persuaded her to be married. So on October 7, 1828, Maria McDowell married James Coe. Their family is given in the Coe Genealogy.
