Josie Gertrude was born on February 3, 1895 to William and Sarah Hays in Kenesaw, Nebraska. She graduated high school in 1913 and then marrried Antone Joseph Schimmels on June 4, 1913 in Bloomington, Nebraska.

They had 8 children, Deloyd, Gerald, Myrl, Wayne, Winifred, Irene, Lynn and Kathleen. They made their home in Naponee, Nebraska where Josie was a homemaker while Toney farmed for a living. In the mid 1930's the family moved to Idaho. She was a wonderful cook and an excellent seamstress, making all the children's clothes and many of her grandchildren's clothes in later years.

Josie passed away on July 15, 1970 in Caldwell, Idaho. She was survived by her husband, four sons, Deloyd (Eleanor), Wayne(Lorraine), Winifred (Hilma), Lynn (Imogene) two daughters, Irene Sitts (Willard), Kathleen Morford (Robert), one brother, Wilfred (Alleta), two sisters, Rosie Melton (Elizia) and Helen Effie (Lester), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Hobart, Harold, Cecil, Clifford, two sons, Myrl and Gerald and two granddaugthers, Evelyn Maxine and Vicki Jo.
