Ballendine James, 6th battalion of Fort Gary Horse went to France with brigade staff of Canadian Mounted Rifle Brigade, transferred to 8th battalion appointed sniper, wounded invalided as unfit for further military duty, now at home in Battleford, Sask.

"Shoemaker Jimmy" BALLENDINE was born (on Poundmaker Reserve) near Battleford on, June l6, l882, the son of Frederick S. Ballendine and wife Sophia Gardiner Cardinal. A number of Ballendine's participated in the l885 rebellion with Fred fighting on the rebel side at Cut Knife Hill. James went to school in Battleford and like all the Ballendine's, was a fine athlete. He joined the 22nd Saskatchewan Light Horse in l9ll and left with the first contingent in August of l9l4 and was T.O.S. with the 6th Bn. Fort Garry Horse at Valcartier as Reg. No. l5489. Private Jas. Ballendine, 'H' Co. Transferring to the 8th Bn., 90th Winnipeg Rifles, he came under his friend and Battleford resident, Captain G.G. Smith. James became a top Battalion Sniper but was severely wounded on April l3, l9l6 during the second Battle of Ypres. A piece of shrapnel struck him on the right side, passed through his lung, lodging near his heart. He carried this piece of metal all his life. After a long spell in various hospitals, he was invalided home and took a veterans shoe repair course in
Saskatoon. "Shoemaker Jimmy" assisted Lieut. N.E. Osborn in the formation of the Battleford Y.W.C.A. in l9l8 and was the organization's first Vice President. He carried on his shoe and harness repair shop for many years and died Feb. l6, l938. He was buried in the Battleford Town Cemetery with military honors. James is survived by his wife, Clara Sauvie, son Joseph Mahoney, daughters, Maude, Irene, Helen, Mabel and Bertha.
