Dr. Cheek received his BS degree in Chemistry in 1949 from the Howard University in Washington, D.C., and his PhD in 1953 from the Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, during his U.S. Army career.

He is also survived by children, Lonita Robinson and her husband Harold, Conrad Cheek Jr., Sheila Rainey and her husband Wayne, Dr. Eric Cheek, Sr. and his wife Antoinette, and David Cheek; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Cheek.
