Born to Claude C. and Hetty (Berryhill) Tull, Tom married Mary Jean Dimler on May 18, 1947, in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Claudia J. (George) Komer; one son, Richard T. Tull; five grandchildren and one sister, Jane Watson.
He graduated from Lincoln Community High School and attended Lincoln College. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in communications from the University of Iowa.
He completed post-graduate studies at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., and the American University in Biarritz, France, while serving with the 71st Division in the European Theater during World War II. A recipient of the Bronze Star, Tom also served as emcee with the 5th Infantry Regiment chorus that entertained troops in Europe.
After returning from military service, Tom became an announcer and copywriter for radio station WSIV in Pekin. He later worked and traveled for National Radio Personalities, editing and writing about personalities in various TV and radio stations throughout the United States. He later was a partner in a printing company and then started his own advertising agency, Tull Advertising in Peoria. From 1956 until retirement in 1989, Tom was in the agency business, either as partner or as sole proprietor. Tull Advertising coordinated and produced for eight consecutive years the Central Illinois Santa Claus Parade.
His past affiliations and activities included serving as a board member of the Peoria Advertising and Selling Club; a member of the Public Relations Association of Central Illinois; and as a board member and past chairman of the board for the American Heart Association, Illinois Affiliate. He also served the Heart Association as state fundraising chairman for three years and as a board member and chairman of the State Communications Committee. In 1985, he received the State Heart of the Year Award, the highest award given in Illinois. He was a past Illinois Chapter Chairman of the American Red Cross and was a past Tri-County Chairman of the American Heart Association.
From 1980 to 1983, Tom was a member of the Illinois Governor's Council on Health and Fitness. He was listed in the Marquis Who's Who in the Midwest for three years. He served over 20 years as president of the Pekin Lettes women's amateur softball team as well as serving as the announcer over the P.A. for all of the Lettes' games, resigning in 1983.
Tom served on the board of governors for the Peoria Gridiron Dinner, and for 41 years was well known for playing the part of Satan at its annual dinner, last in 2006.
Tom was a faithful member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin, where he served on several committees and formerly taught Sunday school.
