TRUCK-TRACTOR ACCIDENT KILLS LOCAL FARMER 7-28-92 by Bryan Corbin Daily Journal Staff Writer Obituary, page A10 A Franklin farmer was killed Tuesday in Morgan County when a tractor he was driving was struck from behind a semi-trailer truck. James Jeffrey Ward 33, was driving a John Deere tractor north along the berm of State Road 37 near Waverly at around 6:05p.m. According to a preliminary Morgan County Sherriff's Department report, Ward traveled off the berm onto the road and apparently didn't see the approaching northbound semi truck behind him. The truck driver swerved onto the berm to avoid the tractor. Seeing the truck, Ward also swerved onto the berm, but into the truck's path. The truck driver could not stop in time, and struck the tractor. Ward was thrown from the tractor, and was dead when an ambulance crew arrived, said Morgan County Coroner Thomas Neal. An autopsy was to be conducted today at Morgan County Memorial Hospital. The truck driver, Clayton J. Bradley, 39, of Henerson, Ky., was not charged in the accident. The Morgan County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident. No other information was available today. A lifelong farmer, Ward had farmed around Johnson County in partnership with Larry Martin of Franklin since 1985. "They don't come any better than him," Martin said of Ward. "He was like a son to me." Martin described his partner as a witty person who enjoyed playing basketball. "He was very determined," Martin said, "He like what he was doing--that's all you can get out of life." Ward was driving the tractor from one field to another to finish some mowing when the accident occurred. Johnson County extension agent Rick Chase said the accident is an example of the dangers farmers face when they must move equipment on heavily-traveled roads. "A tractor at most goes maybe 20 miles per hour," Chase said. "All the traffic is going 50-60 miles per hour. You just run up on a tractor before you know what's happening. "Farming is dangerous no matter what," Chase said. He was buried on 1 Aug 1992 in Fag# 45684479; Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, Johnson, Indiana, United States. He was also known as Jeff. James was described as six feet six inches tall, blonde hair (balding as he got older), and blue eyes. He was a Christian in IN. He was named after his father, James Joseph Ward.
