Robert Spencer Borland. He was a Teddington man through and through, though spending part of his ecclesiastical carreer in Hampshire. James, his father, was a medical doctor and worked as an inspector of army hospitals. His mother's name was Susanna Frances. Though Robert Borland is so famous, little appears to have been written. I will delve and extend this article when possible. Robert's fame, of course, lies in his work in digging out the floor of St Mary, Teddington, and removing the human remains which announced their presence whenever the door was opened. I cannot say at present whether Borland himself undertook the digging. The Borland family home was just round the corner, in Kingston Road. I had expected the burials to have taken place at Shacklegate Lane, but no, the St Mary burial records show that Robert is there, with his father and mother. This was a late burial and the Parish records show concern at the over-crowding at St Mary's. Can Robert Borland be Teddington's most famous resident or does that accolade go to Noel Coward?
