Alexander (called "Ding," as were both of his sons), returned from World War I completely bald, having lost his hair overnight from sleeping on a canvas bag of chemicals. He was wounded in the war and carried a piece of shrapnel in his body the rest of his life. His granddaughter Tricia remembers the fairly large chunk that rested at the base of his skull along his spine—it being inoperable in those days.

Other children include Patricia Lou Dingwall Albin (findagrave memorial # 5013991), George William Dingwall (findagrave memorial # 27221526), and Lois Ann Dingwall.
