Growing up with my grandparents my diet could best be described as fried meat and gravy bread. Grandma always kept a crock on top of the stove to collect all the fat and meat drippings. As part of almost every meal she finished her cooking with a big skillet of gravy made from the old grease jar. Grandpa and I would finish a meal with a couple of slices of bread covered with this gravy and then clean our plates by wiping them off with a fresh piece of bread.

Grandma was the minister and owner of a Spiritual Church of Divine Science in Fort Wayne Indiana. Part of her religious duties included helping people, for a fee, by holding consultation sessions. The kind of things people today would accomplish by visiting their shrink. Of course she did this with quite a flare by calling up the dead and speaking to people's deceased relatives through her dearly departed Indian guide.

Grandma's side of the family believed strongly in the concept of cash and carry. They didn't trust banks and always kept their money hidden but close at hand. Grandma's Grandparents, the Stevens, literally used their bed's mattress as their savings account.

Every time grandma got a bill in the mail we jumped into the car so she could go downtown and pay it off in cash. She loved the feel of cash and spent a lot of time sitting at the dinning room table counting out the stacks of dollar bills to keep track of how things were going.
