Charles Russell was the son of Samuel Newton Avary and Myrtle Franks. Siblings were Marie, Lucille, Willie, Luke, and Inez Avary.
Corporal Avary was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. He was killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on August 18, 1950. Corporal Avary was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. His buddy, Pfc Bob Baughan was injured trying to save Charles and later escorted his body to Childress for burial. USMC Sgt Bob Baughan gave this report.
Additional note from Michael Price: Russell joined the Marines in Dallas, TX on April 21, 1949, when he was 19 years old. At the time he was killed on August 18, 1950, he was 21 years 4 months 11 days old. There was a 21 gun salute at his funeral in Chldress, TX.
