Private First Class Barney was a member of the 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy near Panmunjon in Korea on July 25, 1953. Private First Class Barney was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

David's parents were Charles Edward and Amy Louise Elwell Barney. Siblings were Amy, Charles Henry, and Robert Elwell Barney.
