This ranch was owned by his grandparents, Horace and Mary Campbell of Roseburg, OR. His father died a year after Robert was born in a dynamite accident working on the new highway, I-5.

He married Esther Ann Beight (1917-1967) on January 29, 1939 in Woodland, Cowlitz County, Washington and had two daughters: Rebecca Ann (Proebstel) and Constance Catherine (Hemminger).
After Esther died in 1967, he married Daphne M. Smith on Dec 5, 1968.
