Robert Gross Campbell was the only child of Harry Lora and Rebecca Gross Campbell of Rice Hill, Douglas County, OR. He was born at the home ranch at the top of Rice Hill. This ranch was owned by his grandparents, Horace and Mary Campbell of Roseburg, OR. His father died a year after Robert was born in a dynamite accident working on the new highway, I-5.

Robert Campbell used the name, Delmer Keith Campbell. He served in the United States Marines from 1934-1938. He was an engineer and a rancher.

He married Esther Ann Beight (1917-1967) on January 29, 1939 in Woodland, Cowlitz County, Washington and had two daughters: Rebecca Ann (Proebstel) and Constance Catherine (Hemminger).

After Esther died in 1967, he married Daphne M. Smith on Dec 5, 1968.
