Resin was a "bound" child and lived with and worked for the Spangler family until he was able to be on his own. He met Mary Pharro in Saint Louis while he was working on a Mississippi River Boat. He worried about Mary when she became ill and he took her on the River Boat with him. They married 2 July 1849 in Saint Louis, Missouri. Their children: Charles Francis, Mary Alice, Sarah Belle, Martha Letitia, Samuel Reason, Elizabeth Cornelia (Nellie), Jennie May, James Ernest, Emmet Edmund, Minnie Ellen, Rosa N, Ernest W, and John Edwin Oliver. They may have had another child who died as an infant.
