Joseph H Stokes Jr. emigrated between 1854 and 1858 from Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland. He lived in Kelso, Missouri until 1862. He is the son of Joseph H Stokes, a school teacher, and Maria Lowe Stokes. He has two sisters, Sarah Jane and Mary Ann. In 1862 he enlisted in the Illinois reserves. Coincidentally, he and Francis Degress his future Field Officer signed up 3 days after his sister Mary Ann Stokes married Captain John Jordan Biggs, a recruiter for the Illinois Volunteers. He served with the famous 1st Illinois Light Artillery, Company H "Degress Battery" from 19 Feb 1862 until 14 Jun 1865 when the company disbanded. The Degress Battery was one a favorite toy of General Sherman and fired the first artillery shots at the Battle of Atlanta. He was a POW at Andersonville Prison and marched at the Grand Army of the Republic parade in DC.
