Lester was born the oldest child to Linn and Harriet (Richie) Coval and lived on the family farm in Kalvesta Kansas until the family sold the farm in 1966 to move to Dodge City.
Lester contracted polio at age five, the first case of polio in Finney County. He recovered, but suffered sterility as a result.
Lester helped on the family farm by hauling cattle for his father Linn and his uncle, Marvin Troehmel, as well as trucking for other area farmers.
After graduating high school in 1963, Lester attended Fort Hayes State with a desire to study Agriculture, with a focus on business and animal husbandry, with a minor in Music Theory. After one year though, he was approached by a Navy recruiter and left college to begin his 20 year career in the USN.
In 1971, Lester married Patricia. The two adopted the child of Lester's cousin Dolores (Troehmel) Johnson, following her death. This would be their only child.
In 1990, Lester returned to trucking, a job he had always hoped to do again and continued working as an OTR truck driver, owner-operator, until his death in 2000.
In 1992, Lester and Patricia separated and later divorced. Lester was awarded custody of their adopted daughter.
In 1997, Lester was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his battle in 2000.
He was survived by his only daughter, two grandchildren, his brother Loren, and his sister Debra.
