Joseph "Joe" W. Ausherman, 70, of 7811 Lyons Farm Road, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital. Born Dec. 20, 1926, in Fayetteville, Pa., he was the son of the late Thomas L. and Ruth W. Wilkinson Ausherman. He graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1945. He attended Chambersburg Business College and reat estate schools.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Italy with the 88th Infantry Division. He was a former member of Chambersburg Presbyterian Church, where he held church offices. He was a member of Waynesboro Presbyterian Church. He owned Ausherman Brothers Real Estate, Waynesboro, from 1948 to 1995. He was Chairman of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners from 1960 to 1968, and was a Franklin County Commissioner from 1983 to 1992. He was on the board of directors of Citizens National Bank and Trust Co., Waynesboro. He was a member of the Franklin County Board of Realtors, the Pennsylvania Realtors Association, and the National Association of Realtors. He was a licensed Pennsylvania and Maryland real estate broker.
He was a consultant designate of the american Association of Certified Appraisers, and was senior certified valuer of the International Institute of Valuers. He was a member of Waynesboro Hospital board of mangers, and was board president for six years. He was a member of Waynesboro Lions Club, and was two-term chairman for Zone 14-C. He was a director of Wayneboro Red Cross for a number of years, and was president for two years. He was president of the Community Chest Board, now the United Way, for one year. He was United Way campaign chairman for one year. He was a member of Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce, and was president and board member. He was on the advisory board of the Small Business Administration. In 1982, he was director of Shared Mobile Systems of the Waynesboro, Chambersburg, Gettysburg and Hanover Hospitals. He helped start the Waynesboro Industrial Development Corp., serving many years as director and vice president. He was chairman of the Franklin County Bicentennial Board and served on advisory boards throughput Franklin County. He also was a member of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695; BPO Elks 731; Joe StickellAmerican Legion Post 15; Acacia Lodge 586; F&AM, all of Waynesboro; Waynesboro Shrine Club; George Washington Royal Arch Chapter 176; Continental Commandery 56; Knights Templar; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg; Zembo Temple AAONMS, Harrisburg; 88th Infantry Division Association; National Rifle Association; Narrows Gunning & Game Protective Association, McConnellsburg; and Waynesboro Fish and Game Association.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn A. Aughinbaugh Ausherman, whom he married July 31, 1948; one daughter, Carol R. Henicle of Waynesboro; one son, Paul W. Ausherman of East Petersburg, PA.; one sister, Jean Auginbaugh of Denver, Pa.; one grandson; one step granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Ocker; and one brother, Tom W. Ausherman.

Burial will be Friday in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
