Army Air Force Sgt Elbert R. Barnes, 23, radioman, from Escatawpa MS was stationed at the American Air Base in Stephenville, Newfoundland during World War II,
hopped aboard a Douglas C-54A Skymaster with a civilian crew delivering mail for the Army, they were en route from England to Washington D.C., when the plane, 70 miles off course, crashed in inaccessible wilderness mountains near the summit of Fort Mountain in the Katahdin Range.
The crash site was left as a war relic and an informal monument for over 65 years.
Army Air Force Sgt Barnes was trying to get home on leave.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR SGT. E.R. BARNES
The body of Sgt Elbert R. Barnes, radio mechanic in the Army Air Corps, and sole army passenger in a transport plane which crashed during a storm June 20 over Maine mountains, arrived in Pascagoula Sunday.
Sergeant Barnes was 22 years old, the son of Rev. and Mrs. A.N. Barnes of Escatawpa. His last visit home was a year ago, when he spent a 15-day furlough with his parents.
The funeral was from the Church of the Latter Day Saints, with Rev. Franklin Steiner, assisted by Rev. Miller, officiating.
He was accorded the honor of a military burial, with a flag draped casket, and 12 men from Keesler Field as an honorary escort. Interment was at Robert's cemetery at Escatawpa.
Surviving him besides his parents are four brothers, Curtis, Otis, Myron and Pvt. Leroy Barnes, who has been overseas about seven months; four sisters, Margie, Ivan, Wilda Pearl and Wanda Merle Barnes, all of Escatawpa, and Mrs. Dellia Davis, Escatawpa, and Mrs. Isabel Barnes, Mobile, grandparents.
