Margaret's mother was Catherine Ann (Hardyman) McDaniel. She was a domestic laborer (maid, cook, servant, etc.), could not read or write, and moved frequently. Her father was William J. McDaniel, but he has not been found.
In every census during her adult life, Catherine was the head of household. More children appear over time, but she remains head of household. Her husband may have been a surveyor or had a job that required travel.
Some of the McDaniel relatives have proposed that he may have had a second wife and family, a few miles away. Time will tell.
Catherine McDaniel's dates are 1833 to 1892. She is buried at Old Blue Creek Cemetery in Jefferson County, Alabama. Her husband, William J. McDaniel, is still lost to us.
