Charley was raised on a farm in Tama County, Iowa. He received a 12th grade and helped with the farm work. Charley Kolp married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Childs in Traer, Iowa on Valentine's Day in 1900.

For the first 12 years of their marriage the family was very mobile. the lived in Minnesota and Texas then returned to Iowa to settle in Paullina. Along the way babies were born. Wallis "Earl" came along in 1901 in Iowa. In Minnesota Irene Margaret was born in 1904 and Carl was born in 1907. At the age of 11, Earl was killed in an accident when he fell or jumped off a buggy.

Charley liked cars. He managed a gas station in Paullina. In 1914 Charley had one of the first two Model-Ts that came to town. Between 1937 and 1952 he spent most of his winters (4-5 months a year) in Florida. He seemed to enjoy himself a lot, going to nightclubs, going to musical events and going to the beach often.

Carl and his wife, Olive, took care of Charley in his later years. Charley spent the last three years of his life in a nursing home in Sutherland, Iowa and eventually died of "fluid in his chest around his heart" on the Ides of March, 1961.
