Nelson grew up in Havana, Cuba, where his father had a haberdashery. He was a member of the class of 1959 at Ruston Academy of Havana, but left before graduation.
After the revolution, the family settled in the Miami area, where he graduated from high school.
At the University of Florida, he majored in Food Science and received both a BS and an MS in that field.
He then went to work at Lipton in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. He lived first in Parsippany but died a resident of 7100 Blvd. East in Guttenberg.
Nelson loved New York and its many attractions. He worked for the summer at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
