William E. Anderson Syme was born 1879 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, the 3rd of 4 known surviving children (all boys) born to businessman Andrew Syme Sr. and his (2nd) wife, Annie Shepard Bryan.

He was the paternal grandson of prominent newspaper editor John W. Syme & Marcy C. Madden, and gr-grandson of Scottish-born Rev. Andrew Syme & Jean M. Cameron, Rector of Blandford Church, and subsequently St. Paul's Church in Petersburg, VA. He was the maternal grandson of Hon. John Heritage Bryan & Mary Williams Sheperd/Shepard of Raleigh.

William attended the Raleigh Male Academy and entered the NC College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1896, and was graduated in 1899 with the degree B. S. Following graduation, he became an Instructor in Chemistry at the same College from January 1, 1900 until June, 1903, when he received the degree M. S. for graduate work. He was then awarded a scholarship to John Hopkins University as a graduate student in Chemistry and began his studies in October 1903.

William died on December 15, 1909. He was 30 years old.
