Benjamin Neale was born Feb. 13, 1760 in Fauquier Co., VA, the son of Joseph and Mary Neale. Joseph's will mentions children Sarah, Ann, Mary (a.k.a Polly), Judith, Joanna, Benjamin, and a female child. Since the potential child is not mentioned in Joseph's estate records, it can be assumed that she did not survive. Joseph may have been the son of Benjamin and Mary Ann Neale who received a lease for lives in the Parish of Leeds in Fauquier County in 1760.

Benjamin served as a private during the Revolution and received a pension according to the law of June 7, 1832. He subsequently went to Hampshire Co., WV; his presence there is attested from 1795. He married Christianna (a.k.a. Teeny), the widow of John Earsom who died 1790. Benjamin owned land in Hampshire County, but sold much of it to satisfy a debt. On Oct. 10, 1800 he bought 200 acres of land in Logan County (probably present-day Butler) on the Muddy River. He also inherited land from his father's grant in Bullitt County, and bought the interests of his sisters. He also bought land in Butler County in 1843 and 1849. Family tradition states that he lost much of this land for failure to pay taxes.

Christianna Neale may have died about 1804, since she is not mentioned in a sale of land that Benjamin made in that year. According to Adams County, Ohio records, Benjamin married there Delilah Barton on Feb. 4, 1807 (this date is approximate). They had crossed over the Ohio River from Butler County for the wedding. It is not known who her parents were, but she was born in Maryland according to census records. They lived in Butler County until about 1852. Benjamin Neale died April 15, 1853 at the home of his son-in-law Woodbeck Low in Shelby County, Indiana and was buried in the Old Sugar Creek Methodist Cemetery.
