Pvt. Robert L. Burgess C. S. A., 3rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company C Robert L. Burgess enlisted in the 3rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company C on June 6, 1861. He was only sixteen years old. His regiment fought in Virginia at South mills, Seven Pines and Malvern Hill. Robert was wounded at Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862 and his age was discovered. He was discharged as underage. On September 1, 1863 Robert enlisted in Company K, 2nd Regiment, Georgia State Troops. On January 31, 1864 he was elected 2nd Lieutenant. His battalion surrendered at Columbus, Georgia in April, 1865. He was mustered out on April 19, 1865.
Robert's wound was reported in the "Daily Constitutionalist" newspaper (Augusta GA) of July 16, 1862, excerpted:
