Joseph Marshall, former businessman in Danville, dies
Joseph Nugent Marshall, 76, a former Danville businessman, died Thursday at his home in Palm Harbor, Fla.
His involvement in the community ranged from running his businesses to offering to shoot pigeons that plagued downtown Marshall Danville. Not as well known was Marshall's behind-the-scene assistance to those who needed help. "He had a big heart," said life-long friend George Perros. "He did a lot of good for people, but he did not want any of the credit".
Jackie Sims, director of the Danville-Boyle County Senior Citizens Center, said Marshall sent a donation to the center each year at Christmas. When the center started collecting money for the building that opened last month, Marshall sent $100 from Florida and challenged others to match his donation.
A Danville native, he opened the Starlite and Twin Hills outdoor theaters. He also had a movie theater on Walnut Street. Later that building became the site of Little Joe's Discounts which he operated for several years before moving to Florida. For a time, he had Little Joe's Flea Market on Airport Road.
Marshall also owned and ran a farm on Airport Road, for several years. During a time when the Danville City Commission was trying to find a way in the 1980s to rid the downtown of pigeons, Marshall told the commission he was willing to get a group of people together to shoot the birds.
Born March 19, 1916, in Filbert, W.Va., he was the son of the late Albert B. Marshall and Amelia Bigiatti Marshall DeCristorfaro.
He is the widower of Ella Hughes Marshall.
Survivors include his wife, Swanee B. Marshall; a brother, Tony Marshall of Mercer County; and two sisters, Mary Morley and Ann Izzi, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home by the Revs. Ernest Martin and Maynard Zylstra. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Michael and George Perros, Archie and Donnie Coffman, Bill Brask and Jake Tyre.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Caldwell, James Toombs and Joe Frankel.
Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. today.
