The son of Samuel & Mary Anna (Howard) Fitz ("Fetz" in the 1850 census), in 1860 he was an apprentice living with and/or working for blacksmith Washington McGinley in Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg, Franklin County, August 24, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 as a private with a unit that became known as Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 29, 1863, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company October 12, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.

He married Amanda Catherine Gilson March 2, 1869, in Franklin County and fathered Elizabeth Mae (1870-1956 - married Oskar Wulff), Emory Eugene (1873-1948), Daisy Pearl (1876-1899), and Roy Howard (1884-1949). Their first child was born in Benton County, Iowa, and by 1880 had settled in Marshall County.
