Harry was the oldest child of the farmer "Will" and "Little Maggie" Critchlow's 13 children.

Harry went to the Wesley Academy in PA and he started teaching at an elementary school at the age of only 16. He then moved to New York State and worked for Western Union for 33 years surveying and supervising the installation of telegraph poles along the railroad tracks.

Before he was married, Harry along with his brothers Braden and Elton, lived in a pullman car on a side track in Hornell, one of the biggest railroad towns along the Erie line.

Harry was the foreman in charge of the crew responsible for the area between Buffalo and New York City. They worked maintaining the poles and fixing the telegraph lines along the railroad.

He married Pearl Carney on April 20th, 1922 and they lived in Pearl River, New York. They had a son they named Lawrence Leroy and a daughter they named Dorothy Arlene.
