Alexander J. Petho, Sr. "Sheik"

Alex was born in Hungarian Settlement, Louisiana to Nicholas Stephen and Juliana Albert Petho. He came from a large family with vivid memories of the Depression. Everyone had to work hard, this was a way of life then. Alex attended the Hungarian Settlement school, later moving to Albany, where he graduated in 1943.

In 1944, he was drafted into the United States Army. His tour of duty placed him in the 34th Division, 168th Infantry Regiment, Company A, 1st Battalion which later incorporated to Company A 351st Infantry Regiment (88 Blue Devils). Alex was in four major battles in the European Theater. One was the Battle of Montecasino in Italy. The 34th Division was credited for capturing more than 40,000 German prisoners. When the war ended, his tour of duty took him to Tarvisio, Italy. Here he met the love of his life, Franca Franz. Their love story is truly an epic which could be called "Love and War". Alex and Franca were married in Italy through the Catholic church in August of 1945 and later through the United States government on January 2, 1947. Together they had three children, Juliana, Laura and Alex Jr.

Alex and Franca spent their life together in Hungarian Settlement, working on the farm raising various truck crops. In the late 1950's Alex went to work at Delta Tank and then to Kaiser Aluminum in Baton Rouge where he retired after 30 years.

Alex was a member of Tucker A. Gregoire American Legion Post for 45 years, serving as the Post Commander for many terms. Many have said that he is what a true Legionnaire stand for. Alex's love for his family and country was eminent with the patriotic pride he displayed as a member of the American Legion. He would say on many occasions, that "the American Legion stands for the veteran and their families and we need to remember that". Alex was a member of the Disabled Veterans, The Blue Devils, AmVets Post 68 and St. Margaret's Catholic Church.
