Hazel De Ette Abel, 86, of Hermiston died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Regency Hermiston Rehabilitation and Care Center in Hermiston.

Hazel was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Paonia, Colo., to Shirley Lee and Elsie Maye Hill Moore. She attended a two-room schoolhouse for two years and then her family moved to Salem in 1929 and later to Cascade Locks in 1930. She moved to Cottage Grove in 1939 and graduated from high school in 1940.

She married Milford "Bud" Abel in 1946 in Pendleton. They purchased some land on Wildhorse Mountain and moved there in 1951. They lived there until 2006, when they moved to Milton-Freewater, and then to Hermiston earlier this year.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Bud Abel of Hermiston; son Mack Abel of Hermiston; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Delmar Moore.

A memorial gathering was held from 1-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at the Weston Memorial Hall in Weston.
