Susie was the daughter of Henry McFadden who was relatively prosperous from the oil business. Therefore, she had a privileged childhood and had things such as a camera, player piano, etc. She learned to develop her own film as a teenager. She took many pictures over the years, most of which have disappeared. When Susie was young they lived on the Harry McFadden property, now at I80 and Georgetown Road, north of Nectarine. There was a large rock between the house and barn with a small bowl shaped depression where Susie fed the cats. She called it the "cat in a hole". We had McFadden family reunions there in the 1950's. As far as we know (in 2010), it is still there.

She and Lee had four children, Dean, William, Dale and Ethel. She managed the records and written communications for the farm. As a farmer's wife she canned fruit, vegetables, meat, made lye soap; baked and other home chores. Family oral history says that between 1918 & 1922 Lee & Susie were in the process of adopting a child but that it died before the paper work was finalized.

She and Lee both owned and carried revolvers. Lee once used his to shoot a wild cat over his head as he walked to work. She and Lee were Matron and Superintendent of the Butler County Home for six years after retiring from farming. They did extensive traveling by house trailer after retirement with a winter home in Florida.
