John was the second child and eldest son of William and Georgia Lossing Gleason. As a child he moved with his family to Steele County, near Finley, where he grew up and attended school.
John married Betsy Andrina Sampson on July 3, 1923 in Finley. They farmed in the area until 1945 when they moved to Sharon, where John began a drayline to haul mail, coal and freight off the trains that came through. He served the town of Sharon as their policeman for over thirty-five years. John and Betsy had eight children: Elvina Alice, Betty Jane, John Orville, Jr., Gladys May, Donna Joy, Ruth Elaine, Darlene Joan, and Marjorie Elnora.
John married Clara Hagen in 1974, she died in 1983.
John is survived by his children, 38 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.
