MR. LEONARD E. BAKNER, 89, of 7824 Anthony Highway, Waynesboro, PA, died at 5:25 P.M., Friday, August 8, 2008 in Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro. His death was sudden and unexpected.

Born August 23, 1918 in the Fairview area of Quincy Township, Franklin County, PA, he was the son of the late Stewart E. and Susan Mae (Shockey) Bakner. He was a life long resident of the Quincy Township and Waynesboro areas.

Mr. Bakner served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He and his late wife, Mrs. Elenora (Kauffman) Bakner, were married November 28, 1940. They had lived at their present residence since 1944. She died October 3, 1990.

In his early life, Mr. Bakner was employed as a laborer at Ben Tarman and later at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro, for 5 years. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he was employed as an equipment maintenance foreman and machine shop lead foreman for Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA for 30 years.

He was a life member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association.

Mr. Bakner is survived by two grandchildren, James D. Bakner and Heather E. Bakner; his daughter-in-law, Arlene S. Bakner; and a brother, Stewart D. Bakner.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Darwin L. Bakner who died August 26, 2001; three sisters; and four brothers.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, August 14, 2008 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro, with Pastor Lee Daywalt officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy, PA.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, in the funeral home.
