Abney, Wilborn Callaway

(s/o Benjamin Hezekiah, c.
1804-1878 Oak Level, Cleburne
Co., Ala. & Elizabeth Hogan
Abney, B. c. 1802
m.c. 1851 Rebecca Shipp
B. 04 Jan 1828 D. 1895)

Unfortunately there are several errors, most understandable.

According to Family Bible owned by his granddaughter Gladys Abney of Austell, Georgia, he was born April 28, 1828, and he died January 4, 1910, in Catoosa County, Georgia. [Although he lived most of his life in Paulding County, records indicate he was born in Jackson County and died in Catoosa County.]

On March 20, 1851, he married Rebecca Ship who was born December 17, 1832. [There is some question about her birth year.] The Bible states that Rebecca died March 16, 1867.

Shortly after her death, Cal married Martha E. Jane Hogan. The Bible lists her birth as January 29, 1837 and her death as August 23, 1915, in DeKalb County, Alabama. It shows she was buried in Town Clerk Cemetery.

Additional information shown in "The Hogans of Hogansville" says she is believed to have been the daughter of James Hogan, [b. abt 1813 in SC & d. 1886 in New Hope, Georgia]. She is thought to have had two children by an unknown first husband. On the 1910 Alabama census she is listed with her daughter Datha Blalock.

Now, below will be what I found and believe to be correct, however if your research differs from mine, please let me know and explain what you have.

Cal's parents were Elizabeth Hogan, born about 1803 in Jackson County, Georgia, and Benjamin Abney, born about 1804, in Georgia. They were married January 30,1827. She died about 1866 in Oak Level, Cleburne County, Alabama. He died about 1876 also in Cleburne County.. [This was taken from "The Hogans of Hogansville."] And he did have a second wife.

We may never know just how Cal's first name was spelled. On the 1850 census, we see "Calway" only. 1860 lists Wilbern; 1870, William; 1880, Wilborn; 1900, Wilburn; and the Blible, Wilburn. However we do know his first wife was Rebecca Shipp and he second wife was Martha Jane Hogan, probably the widow of Elijah Odell.

His children by Rebecca appear to have been: Parthenia Elizabeth, James, Washington Andrew, and Nancy Lula. By Jane, Vera Dotha, Robert Lee, Corrin, Benjamin, and Gordon, who died as an infant.

Since my grandmother grieved that she did not attend his funeral and the family referred to him as "Cal," I do not care about his first name. I love him because she did. I just wish I had listened to her stories of him more closely.

There are more sources in my files, and like I wrote above if any relative has additions or changes, please let me know.
