While working at TRW, he continued taking night courses at Case. He earned a master's degree in business administration in 1955.
He belonged to the Church of the Western Reserve - Presbyterian, where he was a former elder and treasurer.
He was a Mason. He also was a member of the American Society of Metals.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann (Cookie) Reno Thomas, and son, R. Thatcher Thomas of Moreland Hills.
