Byron Hanson
Helena, Mont. - Byron George Hanson, 89, Hallock, Minn., died peacefully Dec. 23 at the home of his daughter JoAnn Hanson in Helena, Mont.

Byron Hanson was born in Drayton, N.D., April 24, 1920, to George O. W. Hanson and Ella Lindbergh. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member at Red River Lutheran Church. He graduated from Crookston Agricultural High School in 1937.

While exhibiting pigs at the Minnesota State Fair, Byron met Marva Diamond. On Oct. 5, 1941 they were married at her parents' home in Humboldt, Minn. Marva and Byron had two sons, Marvin and Calvin, and one daughter, JoAnn. They lived and farmed together for over 50 years in Kittson County. The farm was designated as a Century Farm by the state of Minnesota. Byron was always proud that six generations of Hanson's have lived on the farm. In 1967 Byron and Marva moved to the Hill House in Northcote, Minn.

Byron served as a director on the Hallock Farmer's Mutual Insurance Board for 25 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriner's, and Lions. Byron and Marva traveled to every state in the union and enjoyed spending the winters in Yuma, Ariz. He was very fond of fishing, traveling, and socializing with family and friends. He spent many summer weekends at his lake cabin at Baudette. Byron traveled to Yellowstone Park as a boy and he continued to explore places far from home into his 80's.

At the age of 80, he achieved a hole-in-one at a Manitoba golf course while playing on the local senior circuit. Byron was still happily driving tractor on the farm at the age of 85.

Family members include his daughter JoAnn Hanson and son-in-law Eric Stimson, Helena, Mont; six grandchildren, Shawn (Lisa) Hanson, Jamestown, N.D., Jerod (Stephanie) Hanson, Hallock, Minn., George (Heather) Hanson, Lancaster, Minn., Kate Hanson, St. Paul, Minn., Carl Stimson (Shino Ito), Tokyo, Japan, Natalia (Lance) Bowser, Helena, Mont.; five great-grandchildren: Laine, Calby, Calvin, Ethan, and Kamela; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Byron was preceded in death by his wife Marva, his brothers Leroy and Kent, and his sons Marvin and Calvin.

Funeral services were Dec. 29, in Red River Lutheran Church. Rev. Phil Tobin, presided; Stephanie Hanson, soloist, Erik Finney, soloist and Janelle Hostrup, accompanist.

Honorary pall bearers were Bill Pemberton, Andy Lyberg, Charlie Lindberg, Ted Kroulik and Arnold Olson. Pall bearers were Byron's grandchildren.

Interment was in Red River Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials preferred to Kittson Memorial Health Care Foundation, Heifer International, or a charity of the giver's choice.

The Austin-Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock, was in charge of arrangements.
