Nathaniel Pope V, third son of Nathaniel, IV (1729-1806) and Lucy S. Fox Pope (1732-89), was born in 1761, at Chilton, Montpelier, Hanover County, Virginia. He was a lawyer and served in the cavalry during the Revolution. He is mentioned in William Wirt's preface to his Life of Patrick Henry. He was killed in a duel. The Virginia Legislature was in session at the time of his death and being informed of what had occurred promptly passed the first anti-dueling law the Commonwealth had known. He married in 1784, Mary "Polly" DuVal (1762-1849), daughter of Samuel (1713-1784) and Lucy Claiborne DuVal (1725-1810), of Henrico County, Virginia.
