Maria Malleville (Wheelock) Allen. Portrait by Rembrandt Peale, c 1820. It hangs in the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, where "Mallie" as they called her, was brought up, her father being John Wheelock, then president of Dartmouth, and son of Rev. Eleazar Wheelock, Dartmouth's founder. A portrait of her husband, Rev. William Allen, who was president of Dartmouth during the two years it was a University, was done at the same time. Rev. William and family removed to Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, where he was president for many years, and where Mallie too early (age 40) reached the end of her years on earth, leaving her husband and 8 children to grieve her lively, wise and loving presence.
