CAPT US ARMY AIR FORCES
WORLD WAR II

Randolph Carlton Hagen ("Buster") was the sixth child of ten born to Brithe Marie Martinson Hagen and Carl Hagen. My dad Benneth ("Buddy" to the family) was 14 months older than Uncle Buster, and they were almost inseparable. In fact, my dad actually flunked a grade in elementary school intentionally so they would be in the same class.

Uncle Buster was a bomber captain during WWII. He was a member of the 8th Air Force, stationed in England. He flew more than 35 missions over enemy territory, and was awarded the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and three battle stars.

After the war, he and my dad both ended up in Portland, Oregon, where their older sister Eileen was living. Eventually, Uncle Buster and his wife, my Aunt Stella, my dad and mom, and Aunt Eileen and her husband, Uncle Truman, all moved to Castro Valley, California. Uncle Buster became a pilot for a commercial airline. On a flight in 1958, the plane crashed in bad weather, killing all on board. Uncle Buster left behind my Aunt Stella, and their two children, my cousins Holly and Carl.
