The Mountaineer, Big Sandy, Mont., 31 May 1934
Virgelle Rancher Instantly Killed as Train Strikes
Charles W. Lanning, age 65, was instantly killed this morning at 9:25, while his mother-in-law. Mrs. Hall, 80 years of age, was probably fatally injured when their car was struck and demolished at a crossing at the Virgelle station by southbound train No. 235.
According to E. D . Forrest, Virgelle storekeeper, who was the only eye witness to the tragic accident, Mr. Lanning was dead by time the train had been brought to a stop, while Mrs. Hall was still unconscious when placed on the train in an effort to get her to a hospital in Fort Benton. She was bleeding profusely from a gash on her forehead and there was little hope she would survive. A deep gash on the base of the skull was the only mark on Mr. Lanning. The car was thrown clear of the train and the bodies were not mangled in the least.
Mr. Lanning had just delivered cream to the station and had turned his car, a 1932 Chevrolet coupe around to cross the tracks and go to the store. The northbound "goose" was on the siding waiting for the southbound train, which had the right of way, to pass. Mr. Lanning apparently did not think of the main line train, as all efforts to attract his attention were in vain. He had gotten about two-thirds the way across when the southbound train, which stops at the Virgelle station only when flagged down, struck his car, throwing if several feet and resulting in his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Lanning live on a ranch southwest of Virgelle, having moved into that country about 20 years ago. Mrs. Hall, mother of Mrs. Lanning, had been making her home with her daughter for the last year, and had passed her 80th birthday just a week or so ago.
Besides his wife, Mr. Lanning is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James L. Murray of Great Falls. There are no other surviving relatives except three or four grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Lanning have been respected and esteemed residents of the Virgelle section for many years and his untimely death casts a pall of sadness over the entire countryside.
