According to the 1957 genealogy "Aldermans in America" by William Alderman Parker, Isaac Wesley Alderman was born in Old Bedford, Connecticut (then part of New York). He was the third of ten children of Isaac and Rachel (DeFreise) Alderman. During his move to the west he met Harriet Barney Young and married her on February 8, 1844 in Laporte County, Indiana. Their first two children were born in Indiana then the family continued westward settling in Dayton, Oregon where his younger brother Albert lived. For a while Isaac and Albert tried their luck in the California gold fields returning to Dayton in 1851 where they took up land next to each other. Isaac met Warren Vaughn and Henry Haines, two young friends of Albert, who were going by trail down to the coast to what was later to become Tillamook County, exploring, trapping and fishing. He joined them and soon moved his young family there where the rest of his children were born.

He and Harriet had nine children:

John Wesley (died age 3)
Mary Ann "Mollie" (Robert Phelps Bird)
Emma Jane (William Bently Duncan)
Albert Lockwood "Wood" (Phoebe J. Graham)
Isabell Josephine "Belle" (John C. "Mac" McLees)
Almira Coleman (died age 3)
Henry Haines (Edith May Kelty)
Walter Birch (Alpha Mapes)
Edgar Bird "Birdie" (died age 9)
