Rachel was the daughter of Joseph Campbell and Genson (Jency) Boyd. Rachel was born December 9, 1823 in Marion County, South Carolina, as the third child and only daughter of Joseph and Jency. Jency had been married previously and had two daughters, Jean and Peggy Ball. Joseph Campbell died in 1834, when Rachel was only fourteen; Jency died about 1851. Jency was living in the home of Rachel and Philip Howard in the 1850 census for Graves County, Kentucky. Rachel married Philip Howard May 20, 1841. Thirteen children were born to the couple. Five of the children died in early years of their life and are buried in Seay Cemetery, Graves County, Kentucky.
